Location

Few districts of Berlin are as multicultural as Kreuzberg, where radically different approaches to life interact in a casual, tolerant and open-minded symbiosis. Opposites are appreciated for their stimulating effect, and diversity is cherished in the gastronomic sector, on street markets and in the bustling streetscape. Boutique stores, coffee roasters, Turkish produce markets, smart advertising agencies and backyard varieté theatres – it’s the blend that makes Kreuzberg so charming. And it is nicely complemented by parks, green areas and canalside hangouts as well as by a rich art and culture scene.

How did Kreuzberg get its name? Look no further than Viktoriapark with its lush old-growth stock of trees. Literally translating into “cross mountain,” it is the name of a hill roughly 66 metres tall and topped by a monument raised by King Frederick William III to commemorate the Napoleonic wars, which boasts an iron cross. Another highlight of this “park area of alpine character” is a man-made cascade: Berlin’s only waterfall.

Regent 56 is very centrally located in the heart of Kreuzberg and well connected. This makes the quarter the perfect home base for people who enjoy the vibrancy of the city with its many options but need a quiet urban retreat to come back to.

Project description

Art and culture represent the things that elevate us and enhance our day-to-day lives. The same was true in 1881, when architect planned Regent 56 with its magnifcent portals, many artisanal elements, glamorous bourgeois fats and the courtyard garden that inspired the name of the quarter. To this day, the place is a gem for those who love the arts and who wish to live their dream of a modern urban life in a unique urban sanctuary. An inhabitable cultural artefact. Rare, precious, authentic. A cultural heritage.

A building cluster that stands out from the standard architecture of its day and age – this was the idea of master builder Riehmer, which he implemented brilliantly. In the age of industrialisation, housing in this area tended to take the form of densely built tenements. Riehmer rejected the concept, aiming for high-end quality of living instead and designing a complex 18 buildings with a private street and generous garden sections in between. The result was a quiet, green idyll in the middle of the city.

During the restoration, heritage curators and conservators carefully searched for original features. Many questions needed to be answered:What material was used for the walls ? How were the wooden elements finished? Are there traces of the primer still? How were the colours of the plaster ornaments harmonised? Every piece of evidence was studied before the adesmen started their wo rk of restoration, combining historic with contemporary elements.

The Regent 56 is more than an urban oasis. The landscape planning effort seeks to put it to various uses: In addition to quiet retreats embedded in richly varied verdure, there will be meeting zones for socialising among old-growth trees, but also near-natural play areas and a boules court. Horticultural elements like suspended wooden benches, natural stones and sculptures with trails and plant beds blend in harmoniously.
